Details in the Trifid Nebula M20
This AAT picture shows details near the center of the Trifid nebula M20, including a compact cluster of newly formed, young stars, the hottest of which now excite the nebula's gas to shine in a region of 40 light years in diameter. This cluster is found near the location where the Trifid Nebula's dust lanes apparently come together.
In this AAT photograph the red emission and blue reflection nebula parts of the Trifid Nebula are prominent. This image is a 3-color composit obtained from black and white pictures taken with different emulsions and filters.
Wider view of the previous image, created from the same set of photographic plates. Note how far the blueish reflection nebula sends out faint extensions into the surrounding space.
This picture was obtained from the same photographic plates as the previous one, but faint details of the surrounding faint nebulae enhanced by special techniques (unsharp masking and photographic amplifying).
Wider view of the previous image, created from the same set of photographic plates.
UKS image of M20. This 3-color composite was created from plates exposed in the blue (40m; IIa-O/GG 385), green (60m; IIa-D/GG 495) and red (60m; 098-04/RG 630) part of the spectrum.
