Nucleus of M31, direct photograph, obtained by David Malin with the Isaac Newton Telescope.
Nucleus of M31, Isaac Newton Telescope, image after unsharp masking according to David Malin. This technique reveals fine detail, especially in the dark dust pattern. The very small bright nucleus appears blueish and slightly elongated. This image was obtained from the same photographic plates than the above.
