[M55, KPNO]

Globular star cluster M55 in Sagittarius, about two thirds of the Moon's diameter, but with a very loose appearance, was photographed here in June 1996 at the Burrell Schmidt telescope at Kitt Peak, during the Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. This is a color composite CCD image.

    [M55, VLT/ESO]

Image of the central part of the southern globular cluster Messier 55 by ESO's first 8.2-m Unit Telescope (UT1) of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The exposure lasted 30 seconds and was made with the VLT Test Camera through an optical filtre isolating mostly red light (570 - 700 nm); here the raw image is shown. The field shown is 83 x 83 arcsec, each pixel measures 0.0455 arcsec.
