Amateur images of Spiral Galaxy M100 in the Virgo Cluster

This is perhaps a good example for a good "normal" amateur CCD image of this galaxy.

    [M100, M. Germano]

Martin Germano obtained this image of M100 with his 14.5" f/5 Newtonian, exposed 90 minutes on hypered Tech Pan 2415. This image is was taken during the January 1994 Northridge earthquake. The epicenter of this 6.7 magnitude quake was approximately 40 miles from Mt Pinos. Martin reports: "I was approximately 16 minutes into the exposure when the quake struck at 4:31 a.m. local time. Since I didn't loose the guide star (I was manually guiding), I continued with the exposure." At the time, the true severity of the earthquake was not known.

    [M100, M. Germano, processed]

The same image as above but processed by blending two scans (SprintScan 4000) of the same negative, with Picture Window software.

This CCD image of Virgo Cluster grand-design spiral M100 was created by Michael Purcell from Grove Creek Observatory (GCO) with their Celestron 14 SCT at f/7 and ST-6B CCD camera, taken on May 1, 1998 at 00:26. It is a 15-minutes exposure. The small galaxy at the upper left is the 14th magnitude galaxy NGC4322.
