Discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783 or 1785.
Caroline Herschel discovered this cluster in 1785, or perhaps already on February 26, 1783. Her brother William included it in his catalog as H VII.12.
The image in this page was obtained by Till Credner and Sven Kohle. It was cropped from a larger image, which they had obtained within their Constellation Canis Major photography. This color film image was taken by Till Credner from Calar Alto on October 29, 1995 (5:03 UT) with a 55mm f/3.5 lens, exposed 10 min on Kodak Ektachrome 400 Elite. The original field of view was 24 x 35 deg.
