Discovered by Abbe Lacaille in 1751-1752.

Southern open cluster NGC 3228 was discovered by Abbe Lacaille in 1751-1752 from South Africa.

This cluster was classified as of Trumpler type I 1 p (Sky Catalogue 2000.0) or II 3 p (Götz). It has about 15 (Sky Catalogue) or 25 (Burnham) stars in a large brightness range, with a slight concentration toward its center, and is detached from its surroundings. Its brightest star is of magnitude 7.9, and the spectral class of the hottest (bluest) star was determined as B9, implying an age of the cluster of 42 million years.
