Discovered by Lacaille in 1751-52.

The considerable southern open cluster NGC 5662 was discovered by Nicholas Louis de Lacaille on May 17, 1752 from South Africa. Later, James Dunlop included it in his 1828 catalog as No. 342, based on his observation of July 10, 1826 from Paramatta, NSW, Australia.

NGC 5662 has been found to be a considerably young cluster of 93 million years of age. It has been classified as of Trumpler type II 3 r. Haug (1978) has cataloged 295 stars in NGC 5662, Archinal, Hynes (2003) give 280 member stars. These authors also give a total diameter of 30', half a degree, or the same angualr diameter as the Full Moon.

The image in this page was obtained by Till Credner and Sven Kohle. It was cropped from a larger image, which they had obtained within their Constellation Centaurus photography. This color photograph was obtained by Sven Kohle on June 10, 1994, at 23:57 LT, from Cerro Tololo, Chile, with a 50mm f/4.0 photo lens; it is a 60-min exposure on Scotchchrome 400 film. The original image covered a field of 27 x 39 deg.
