Discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1784.
When Caroline Herschel discovered this cluster in 1784, her brother William included it in his catalog as H VIII.78.
NGC 225 has been nicknamed the Sailboat Cluster by Rod Pommier in an article in Astronomy magazine.
